Phil’s commute the next morning has us backtrack by car down the hill, across the paddocks and over to the commuter rail station. We park and catch a thirty-minute train ride into Edinburgh.

“How did you get into digital, Phil?” I ask. “Are you an early adopter?”

“I feel like I was both an early adopter and a late adopter of digital,” he tells me. “I’m certainly not one of those people, of whom there are several at Blonde, who were on the Internet from day one and who have every computer and game console they ever owned stashed in the attic. Nor have I ever been a gamer.

“That said, I think I probably am an early adopter compared to many advertising people of my generation. We started Blonde in 2006, the year I turned forty. I’d been in the business for eighteen years by that time, and I know that a lot of my peers either consciously or subconsciously buried their heads in the sand about the whole digital thing, assuming that they were too old, or that they were too late into it, or both.”

The train crosses the iconic Forth Road Bridge again, and I admire the sunrise over the ocean.

When we arrive at Edinburgh station, there’s another fifteen-minute walk uphill to the office. Phil is in good shape, as evidenced by his swift pace and lack of huffing as we head up the hill. We walk with the ancient city and the peak of Arthur’s Seat to our backs, toward the office. Half of Edinburgh is modern while the other half is preserved as the medieval city it once was.

We come upon a café that appears to do mostly take-away business. “Let’s stop here and pick up coffees,” Phil says.

“Ooh, and a sausage roll?” I ask. I have no willpower when I’m visiting the Kingdom.

A friendly guy at the counter quickly delivers small paper-wrapped parcels into our hands. They sure know how to cram meat into intestine casings in this part of the world.

With brekkie and coffee in hand, we arrive at the office, and Phil puts me at the table facing him in an open-plan space. His desk is all about work, with no room for family snapshots. He’s decided to approach my visit as an opportunity for partnership as opposed to internship, so I’ll be working alongside him on all of his projects as an extra pair of hands.

As we finish our coffees, I ask Phil more about his background. Phil had mentioned when we first met that he had studied chemical engineering at university. “So how did you made the switch from engineering to advertising?” I ask.

“I realized a bit late that I didn’t want to be a scientist,” he tells me. So he sought
